Other Gardens?

Other Gardens is an LA-based craft-driven landscape design studio.

We provide more than a garden. We build each client their own personal oasis, from concept to creation to maintenance. We’re a one-stop shop, and we offer a wide range of packages for all of your landscaping needs. 

We’re a collective of people who care deeply about our craft. When we nurture the nature around us, we’re rewarded with beauty and bounty.

Meet the founder, Kyle Stearns

I was raised in a warehouse on a back alley street in Venice. Our front yard was a cement parking lot surrounded by a chainlink fence, but my dad, an artist, possessed the kind of vision that can only come from years of staring at raw materials and seeing the beauty within. 


We made it an urban oasis. He raised beds filled with towering cacti, succulents, and bright, beautiful flowers. Some of my favorite memories with him were spring and summer days in the garden that we maintained together. We created ponds out of cement mixing trays filled with water-loving plants and crawfish. We got our hands dirty. The hours flew by as we built something together.

Soon, we were expanding beyond the walls of our own garden. We tilled up the overgrown sidewalk median and created a small urban farm full of fresh vegetables that we shared with our neighbors.

I didn’t know it then, but I was fostering a lifelong relationship with plants. Since that garden, I’ve worked as a farmer, in construction, and at a plant nursery, which gave me a unique understanding of each step of the process before I launched my own business with Other Gardens. 

Now, four years in, I’ve provided a number of clients with an oasis of their own. 

Plants have come to represent community, growth, and my own connection to nature. Plants provide perspective and nourishment. When I’m surrounded by plants, I’m at peace.

How we work

When I started Other Gardens, I began with a vision to share all that I have gained from plants with others. I wouldn’t just design or install gardens. I would work with clients every step of the way, from concept to creation to maintenance, and I knew I could do it because I have experience in each of these stages. 

Other Gardens would be different because it would be a one-stop shop. No middle man, no need to pay three people for one job. Just a collective of people that are coming together to create something better than themselves.

As we grew, I began to see Other Gardens as more than a business. Like the garden I created with my dad, it became an ecosystem—mutually beneficial and lifegiving to everyone involved. 

I have been able to employ people close to me and empower them to pursue their own passions. I’ve supported training and mentorship so that my team members are gaining more than just a paycheck. And I’ve given my clients a beautiful, one-of-a-kind space to make memories that they will treasure with the people they love. 

What I learned from my garden with my dad was this: if we could build our oasis in a concrete chainlink square, we can do it anywhere. All it takes is some vision and the right team to get you there.
